IAIDO

IAIDO is a form of ken-jutsu (art of the sword). Iaido may also be called iai or iai-jutsu. Shigenobu Hayashizaki is credited with the founding of Iaido early in the sixteenth century. In 1969 The All Japan Kendo Federation (Zen Nihon Kendo Renmei) introduced the Setei Gata curriculum of techniques for Iaido. These techniques were drawn from several of the major sword schools and consists of four seated techniques (suwari-waza) and eight standing techniques (tachi-waza).

The commencement of each technique is from either, a standing position, or with one or both knees on the ground, followed by a quick draw of the sword to cut or strike one, two, three or four opponents, in response to their attack. As Iaido students become proficient in Seitei Gata, they then have the opportunity of studying kata from one of the classical styles of Iaido. Like Kendo, Iaido can provide the means to personal and spiritual development.
