NAGINATA

NAGINATA was traditionally a battlefield weapon. During the Edo period Naginata became popularly practiced by women. Armour is worn by the participants to protect the target areas. The traditional Naginata weapon is a short sword mounted on a long pole or staff. Todays Naginata practice weapon is made from wood and bamboo slats.

Naginata a traditional Japanese martial art of both power and grace, is characterised by the grandeur of its sweeping movements. Naginata is for people of all ages interested in either competitive fighting, or in the physical beauty of choreographed, practiced movements, called kata. The Melbourne Budokai is affiliated with The Australian Naginata Federation, which is affiliated with The International Naginata Federation.
